Explained: The NZ Police psychometric test: what's actually on it
NZ Police entry screening includes cognitive testing alongside the physical, medical and interview stages. This bank practises the reasoning styles used in that testing — verbal, numerical and abstract — with an explanation under every answer.
What the NZ Police entry testing covers
Recruitment runs as a sequence rather than a single exam, and the cognitive test is only one part of it.
The cognitive component draws on three skill areas. They look different on the page but they are all measuring whether you can work accurately under time pressure:
- Verbal reasoning — word meaning, comprehension, and what a passage does and does not say
- Numerical reasoning — percentages, ratios, rates, and reading data from tables
- Abstract reasoning — pattern sequences and the rule that makes the next shape
How the three sections differ in practice
Verbal items punish over-reading. The answer is the one the passage supports, not the one that is true in the world or the one you would argue in a meeting.
Numerical items are rarely hard arithmetic. They are usually one or two steps, with the difficulty sitting in choosing the right step and not mis-reading the table.
Abstract items are the ones most people have never practised. Once you learn to check a fixed list of things — rotation, count, shading, position, size — the sequences stop feeling like guesswork.
A practice plan for the weeks before
Start with the free practice and note which section drops off. That is the section that needs the reps, not the one you find most interesting.
After unlocking, use Drill Mode on a single section per sitting. Twenty focused items on abstract reasoning will move you further than sixty mixed ones.
Work untimed until your accuracy is steady, then add time pressure. Speed built on a shaky method just produces confident wrong answers.
