The car learner licence theory test is the first step on a New Zealand driver licence. It is a multiple-choice test on the Road Code, and the failures are almost always in the same few places.

What the learner licence theory test involves

The test is sat at a driver licensing agent, and it is drawn from the official Road Code for car drivers.

The questions split into core road rules and road signs. In practice the content clusters like this:

  • Give way rules at intersections, roundabouts, and when turning
  • Speed limits, including temporary limits and limits around schools
  • Road signs — regulatory, warning, and information
  • Road markings, lanes, and passing
  • Alcohol and drug limits, fatigue, and licence conditions
  • Parking, lights, and vehicle requirements such as a current WoF and registration

Give way is the section that fails people

Almost everyone can recite 'give way to the right' and then get it wrong at an uncontrolled intersection with a turning vehicle. Work the give way rules as a decision procedure rather than a slogan: who is turning, who is crossing a lane, who has a sign.

Signs are the cheapest marks available. There is a finite set, and repetition is all that is required.

Speed and licence conditions are the quiet failures. Learner conditions — supervision, the L plate, zero alcohol — get tested, and people who have driven overseas often assume the rules match what they are used to.

How to prepare

Start with the free practice to see which of the four areas is weakest, then read that part of the Road Code rather than the whole book.

After unlocking, use Drill Mode to sit give way on its own until you stop hesitating. That single section moves pass rates more than anything else.

Practise until you are answering from the rule, not from a memory of a similar question. The real test rewords everything.

Common questions

Use the free questions to see the style again, then unlock 3 months and drill the section that caught you. Unlimited attempts sit inside that window.
