What the LCQ assessment actually involves
The LCQ is assessed by an approved provider rather than sat online at home, and it is built on unit standards covering the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 and the duties of a duty manager.
The questions are less about memorising section numbers and more about knowing who is responsible for what, and what you are required to do when a shift goes wrong. Most of the content sits in a handful of areas:
- The object of the Act and the concept of safe and responsible sale and supply
- Duty manager responsibilities, including who must be on duty and when
- Intoxication — how it is defined, how it is assessed, and what you must do
- Minors, prohibited persons and acceptable evidence of age
- Licence types, licence conditions, trading hours and signage
- Host responsibility, food and low-alcohol options, and safe transport
Where people lose marks
The recurring problem is confusing what is good practice with what is a legal requirement. A venue can have a house rule that goes further than the Act; the assessment is asking about the Act.
Intoxication questions are the second sticking point. People know a heavily intoxicated person must not be served, and then hesitate on the steps that follow — refusing further service, offering water and food, arranging safe transport, and recording what happened.
The third is evidence of age. Knowing which documents are accepted, and that a doubt about age means you ask, is worth more marks than any single definition.
